Find Your Inner Lion This Week!
Once upon a time there was a flock of sheep living together in a pasture. One of the sheep looked different than the others. His name was Rex. The other sheep repeatedly told Rex that he was just like them. The adult sheep taught him how to act like a sheep—to graze, eat grass, and be part of the group.
For a number of years he lived like a sheep. He would “baa” even though often he felt the urge to roar. One time he did roar and the others made fun of him. He was embarrassed. So he decided it was best to “baa;” he didn’t want trouble with his friends.
When he admitted to dreaming of life in the jungle, the older sheep reprimanded him, “These pastures are good enough for you. Stay here where you are supposed to be.” He often felt the urge to move ahead but others told him he was causing problems. They liked to move slowly as a flock. Rex also wanted to journey independently but the flock felt that was ridiculous.
One day Rex was grazing near a stream. He approached the water’s edge for a drink. As he bent to drink, he caught a glimpse of himself in the water. That day, for the first time in his life, Rex really saw himself. He noticed that he looked nothing like a sheep. He was a lion! He was different, unique. He was strong. He looked regal with his fur coat and mane. For a moment he was overcome with excitement. This small glimpse confirmed to Rex that he was not just an ordinary member of the flock.
The next moment fear came up. Rex had grown accustomed to a life as a sheep. He was comfortable in the flock. What would the others think if he followed his heart and emerged as a powerful lion? Yet, Rex was bored. He was tired of living like the rest of the sheep. He wanted to break free.
Though he felt scared, courage began to build in his heart. Knowing his true identity gave Rex the guts to use his strength to move away from the group. He left the pasture. Freedom was finally his. He had found his voice and he roared at the top of his lungs. Gradually he became quiet in his confidence. He could choose to roar or be quiet. He explored the highlands and moved at his own pace. He found the rhythm of life he had longed for.
He finally felt comfortable in his own skin. At last, he was in sync with himself.
Many of us are so conditioned that we remain in groups even after we’ve outgrown them. We follow the crowd blindly trying our best to fit in. We are careful not to stand out too much so that we are accepted. We stick with the status quo even though we long to break free, to express ourselves in ways that resonate with our spirit.
We live prisoners to mental programming that has caused us to believe “we can’t”, “we shouldn’t” and even “we can’t follow our hearts.” And so we live in our heads playing over and over again the negative programs we’ve picked up along the way. We feel boxed in and miserable. Yet we wear a sheep-like smile to give others the impression that we are “doing just fine.”
I encourage you to look in a mirror this week. Really look at yourself. Look beyond the surface. Take time to see yourself with new eyes. Take off the glasses of self-judgment you’ve been told to wear. Ask yourself, “Who am I and how do I want to live my life?” Let answers come from your heart rather than from your head.
Smile as you see yourself. Let go of ideas of style and physical attractiveness. Instead, notice the uniqueness of your face. Gaze into the bright and sparkly gleam of your own eyes. See the genuineness of your smile. You are incredible, aren’t you? Enjoy this moment of self-appreciation. Feel your energy as you dare to admire yourself.
It’s ok to do this. You aren’t an egomaniac if you do. You are simply connecting to your spirit as it expresses through the body you’ve chosen for this journey. If you find yourself unable to do this, ask yourself why? Then see if you can’t at least find one or two things that you like about yourself.
Now, try to hear your own voice. What is it that you have not been saying that you have in your heart? What is it that you’ve held back for years because you feared others might judge you or mock you or even reject you? Imagine for a moment the way life might feel if you finally gave voice to your truth. As you look in the mirror practice saying those things that you’ve suppressed. It is time for your truth to emerge.
We are all born as lions. But then we are trained to be sheep – accepting without question, limitations imposed on us and sticking with the group. We plod through life even when we sense a strong, purpose and direction in our heart.
Roar, lion, roar. Break free, lion, break free. This is the way life was meant to be lived. You don’t have to stay with the flock in a pasture that’s dry and tasteless to you. Speak your truth, lion, speak it loudly.
Your assignment this week is to notice whether you act like a lion or a sheep. Do you follow the crowd hoping to fit in? Or, do you move at your own pace following the inner yearnings of your heart? Just notice. Don’t judge yourself. There is nothing wrong with the choices you’ve made so far. However, by observing these choices, you can begin to see new possibilities.
Each day this week sit for at least 1 full minute and look in the mirror. Get to know yourself in a whole new way. This time, do it without the judgments and labels others have given you. Who are you at your core? Feel the fire of passion burning within you. Open to this energy and embrace your freedom.
Freedom is available to you in each moment. Dear Lion, begin to choose freedom.
“A truly strong person does not need the approval of others any more than a lion needs the approval of sheep.” Vernon Howard

Harness Your Power: Do Something New!
Yes, I admit it, I LOVED every minute. I felt like a little girl. I wiped out in the snow. I felt the rush as the sled sped down the hill (somewhat out of control).
Saturday night as the snow was just beginning to fall, my husband and I went to an amazing concert at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. The artist, Nneka, is a 1/2 German and 1/2 Nigerian woman. She grew up in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. This woman's music is REAL.
Nneka opened the concert saying, "I'm not here to entertain you. I'm here to show you love. Take it or leave it." Her message is radical -- that we must learn to love not hate, that we must not overlook the obvious issues around the World. We must wake up and do something about it. (Check her videos out on YouTube...you'll get a feel for Nigeria if you watch the scenes...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXMTtOS-oKg ).
I felt so alive after the concert. I was moved in my soul. What a fantastic experience to re-fire my spirit and move me to do more with my talents and my love.
I share all this to say, DO SOMETHING NEW! Get active and out of the routine. It's just so easy to get comfortable in a daily existence and forget that there is new music to be heard, physical activity to be enjoyed and interesting people to meet.
If life feels boring, shake up your energy and step out of your comfort zone.
Drive a new route to work.
Talk to people at the office you typically avoid and do so with an open mind.
Choose a new radio station to listen to.
Eat a type of food that would wake up your senses!
Those of you in PA, just fall on the ground in your neighborhood and make a snow angel.
We are here to L-I-V-E ON P-U-R-P-O-S-E.
I visited my 85 year old grandmother for an hour this week. There she sits in her chair all day long. She is content to listen to books on tape. She has lived her life. We took time telling stories of the days when she chased us as little grandkids. Then, when I was in college she would bake me and my Princeton bball teammates plenty of brownies, rice krispy treats and cupcakes (with hershey kisses hidden in the middle). What a wonderful way she chose to share her love with so many people.
As I left her I realized again that NOW is my moment to live. There is no reason to postpone happiness or enjoyment anymore.
Loving life (yes, even these big challenges),

Harness Your Power: Daily Dedication
Consider this simple formula - Dreams + Dedication = Success
Why aren’t more of us successful? We all have dreams. (If you aren't sure of what your dreams are, check out my video - Write Your Next Chapter. ) Even if we know what we want in 2010, many of us lack the dedication to see our ideas through to successful completion.
How dedicated are you to your personal success? “Most of us serve our ideals by fits and starts. The person who makes a success of living is the one who sees his goal steadily and aims for it unswervingly. That is dedication.” (Cecil B. Demille)
Many of us start the New Year with big hopes and dreams. We may even take the time to write down our goals. Yet, few of us remain focused DAILY on the ideal, goals and desires we have for ourselves.
Consider implementing these ideas:
STAY FOCUSED. DO A DAILY DEDICATION:
To stay on target, I recommend you take at least 5 minutes each day, at the beginning of the day, to remind yourself what you are aiming for. Intentionally review your dreams and goals. Be clear on what actions you can take TODAY to take steps close to your dreams. Say a prayer for Divine help, support and guidance.
TAKE DAILY BABY STEPS!
Yes, small steps add up. Do your part. Follow your guidance. Focus your energy. Do the legwork that comes to mind. Though these steps might seem insignificant, they are essential in making progress to realize your big dreams.
HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE. End the day with DEDICATION:
Each day before going to bed, do a five-minute review – did you stay focused on your goals? Did you make any progress on them? If so, pat yourself on the back.
If not, what distracted you? Can you remove these distractions and disruptions? Renew your commitment. Say a prayer.
Use these three ideas every day the entire year. You will be amazed at the progress you can make with this type of clear dedication.
In the words of the great American football coach, Vince Lombardi, “A man can be as great as he wants to be. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the DEDICATION, the competitive drive and if you are willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the things that are worthwhile, it can be done.”
I'm practicing these ideas with my own dreams. They keep me on track.
I'm here to help and support you in creating a life you love.

Harness Your Power: Make Fun a Priority!
As part of the life coaching process I suggest to my clients that they make a point to have fun as they are walking life's journey each day. Why not celebrate each day and make each day something special? Why wait until a future date or until a goal has been achieved to have fun? Each moment of our lives can be filled with laughter and enjoyment if we remember not to take ourselves and our lives too seriously.
Having fun should be something we plan into each day. Fun means different things to different people -- for some it means getting to Barnes & Nobles to read books and magazines for a few hours, for others it means looking around for wonderful treasures to find in thrift shops. Some of my clients schedule time to get together with a good friend for coffee and others try something new like Belly dancing, pottery or painting.
A client I have been working with since August forgot to prioritize fun during the holidays -- she got so wrapped up in taking care of her family, getting to Christmas parties and getting the gifts together that she forgot to schedule time for herself. As a result, she ended up feeling angry and resentful about her holiday experience. As she entered the New Year she took the time to reflect on why she was feeling out of sorts -- and it occurred to her that she had forgotten to schedule time into each day for having fun. She told me that taking time for fun each day, even if it is just a few minutes a day, has helped her to feel greater joy and satisfaction in her life.
I do my best to practice what I preach. I set an intention for 2008 to find a Hip Hop dance class in my area so I could literally and symbolically dance my way through this year. I love how the Universe conspires with us when we set our intentions. I went to the grocery store a week ago and there was an ad on the cart for a local School of Dance. It was an obvious sign to me that I should call them. Later in the week I called 411 to get their phone number. I called and left a message describing what I was looking for. That evening the owner of the school called me back and said, "Guess what? We have exactly what you are looking for!" They sure did -- and the best part of it all was that the time of the dance class was the perfect time for me -- it is the evening of the week when my husband watches the kids while I host my group life coaching call. Just after I finish that call each week I will head straight to dance class to feel the excitement of learning new dance techniques! The funniest thing about it all was that I told the lady how I had found her school. She laughed and told me that her school didn't advertise on those carts-- it was a different school in the area on the carts. So, 411 gave me the perfect # even when I didn't know who I should be seeking out.
Set the intention to have fun all day long. Why not set aside 5 minutes each hour at work to invigorate yourself -- play a practical joke. Stop by the cube of a friend you haven't spoken with for awhile. Do your best to make whatever work you do playful. Life is only serious if we approach it that way. I've learned that the hard way -- and I now choose to make fun my lifestyle.
Will you dance with me through 2008? Will you find time for fun? Will you stop your housework for a few minutes and tickle your children instead? Will you pick up a comic book or your favorite magazine and put your feet up and relax for 10 minutes this week?
Create the time for whatever feels fun to you. As you do, you will feel your energy return. You will feel young again. You will begin to harness your power with fresh, light energy.
With a laugh, a tickle and a smile,
Trish aka Thought Dr.
